Advances in Cross-Linked Polyethylene Insulating and Jacketing Compounds

Technology has been developed to produce wire and cable insulating and jacketing compounds that release significantly reduced amounts of smoke, toxic, irritant, and corrosive gases on exposure to heat or flame. These materials are also formulated to high levels of flame resistance. Based on thermosetting polyolefins, these compositions project superior performance in mechanical properties, including resistance to abrasion, cut-through, and heat-aging characteristics. Novel thermosetting technology was developed specifically to facilitate fabrication of wire and cable products. Cables fabricated using this novel processing do not require high temperature and pressures for cross-linking and, as such, will reflect low distortion and product damage. Mold curing is obviated, and the extensive handling during manufacture and the associated potential for cable damage has been reduced. The end user will benefit substantially from these improvements through enhanced safety and greater reliability.
