New Application of Thyristor Motor Drive System

Thyristor Motor drive (Load Commutated Inverter) is the most suitable system for large AC motor variable speed drive because the system is easily designed to provide large capacity and high tension and it has a high operating efficiency. In this paper, recent new applications utilizing these features are introduced as follows: (1) For energy saving (Variable speed drive for pump, blower and compressor) The Thyristor Motor Drive System was operated on an existing synchronous motor over 10MW in capacity. This paper shows the technique to utilize the maximum capacity of existing motor and operation data of the system. (2) For exchange DC motors AC motor variable speed drive systems rapidly take the place of DC systems in many applications such as in the block-mill drive of wire rod mill. To obtain high performance as required in these applications, microprocessor-based control scheme and abundant self-diagonosis function were developed. (3) For very high speed and large capacity drive systems A high speed (5000∼6000rpm) drive system which can be used for high speed pump or compressor without using increasing gears was developed. This paper introduces the Super Motor Drive System, which is a 30MW system.
