Xerographic Development Using Single-Component Non-Magnetic Toner

A new xerographic development system using single-component non-magnetic toner has been developed. No magnetic material is necessary for this system. A thin layer of non-magnetic toner is formed on the surface of a metal roller by means of an elastic metal plate which is pressed against the roller. The toner particles are charged t r iboelect r ically by friction with the metal piale. The toner layer is attracted to the roller only by electrostatic force, and is carried around to the photosensitive drum. The latent image is developed wiLh the noil-contact development technique. The insulative toner, developed for this system, has a superior triboelectric characteristic. The quality of the developed image is equal or superior to that of the two-component technique, and the system retains high reliability. A model for toner charging is shown. The numerical calculations based on the model agree well, with the experimental results. The model suggests that the metal plate controls the toner charge.
