Design of Direct Cooled Electromagnetic Stirrers

Electromagnetic stirring can be explained in simple terms as the use of a multiphase A.C. Stator in reasonable proximity to a moveable electric conductor - the liquid metal to be stirred. EMS, has become a key technology in continuous casting practices in recent years. The metallurgical results obtained with different types of equipment for an increasing number of steel grades are well documented' as are the fundamental principles and numerical solutions of electromagnetically driven flows in various metallurgical systems^2;3. in practice the achievement of a stirring or rotary action in a liquid metal being continuously cast is more problematic. The environment of a Casting Floor, where considerable rough handling can be expected, is hostile to any exposed electrical equipment. To avoid these hazards and also to accomplish efficient magnetic coupling it was decided to integrate the EMS coil into the mold housings of the casting machines.
