Photoionization as the Secondary Mechanism in a Townsend Breakdown in Air

In a Townsend breakdown, a radiative secondary mechanism is necessary to explain the speed at which breakdown occurs. The simulations reported here indicate that photoionization can account for the breakdown voltages of uniform field air gaps with lengths of 0.1 to 1 cm at atmospheric pressure.
