Variable-Speed Control System for AC Motors for #3 Continuous Casting Machine at the Wakayama Steel Works

A new high speed continuous slab and bloom caster equipped with the latest technology came into operation on September 30, 1981 at the Wakayama Steel Works of Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. The caster is of particular interest as it is equipped with AC motors for every speed control drive system. The paper reports on the research behind this innovation and the improvements which were carried out after test runs. This type of AC variable-speed control system is the most suitable system for the functions required by continuous casters, therefore the authors suggest that motors and control systems be standardized.
