Combination of 2D and 3D Finite Element Models in the Design of Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Machines for Electric Vehicle Applications

This paper deals with the combination of 2D and 3D finite element models in the design of axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines for electric vehicle application. First, a 2D finite element analysis (FEA) design tool suitable for different AFPM machines topologies is proposed giving access to a fast evaluation of various designs. The impact of the slot- pole combination on double stator-single rotor architecture is carried out using this tool. Secondly, the level of accuracy and limitations of this method are highlighted by a comparison with 3D FEA. Finally, a 18-slot/12-pole AFPM machine is calculated and the effect of magnet segmentation in radial and tangential directions on eddy current losses is added using 3D FEA.
