Interference Mitigation in Joint Communications and Sensing-Part II: Coding and Spreading

The integration of dual functions, in joint communication and sensing (JCS) networks, can be considered as the consecutive procedure of coding (for modulating the communication information) and spreading (for enhancing the sensing performance due to the spectrum spread and combating interference due to the vector signaling), similarly to code division multiple access (CDMA) in traditional communications. The spreading gain, which equals the ratio between the Fourier bandwidth and Shannon bandwidth, determines the communication data rate, interference power and the randomness in the sensing performance. Therefore, a coding-spreading trade-off exists for the compromise between communications and sensing. In this paper, the coding-spreading trade-off is studied both analytically and numerically, which provides theoretical guidelines for the analysis and design of practical JCS networks.
