Design and Development of Stacked Multi-Permittivity Dielectric Resonator Antenna (DRA) for Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) Applications

This paper presents a design and analysis of stacked multi-permittivity Dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) for UWB applications with multi-band frequencies ranging from 3.3GHz to 9.9GHz with a total impedance bandwidth of 6.6GHz. The antenna is designed by using a low cost FR4 substrate of dielectric constant $(\varepsilon_{\mathrm{r}})4.4$, loss tangent (tanδ) of 0.02 and thickness (h) of $0.0128\lambda$, The DR elements (to be stacked) are Alumina $(\varepsilon_{\mathrm{r}}=9.4)$ and Silicon $(\varepsilon_{\mathrm{r}}=11.9)$ with loss tangents (tanδ) of 0.006, 0.005 respectively. DR elements of thickness $(\mathbf{H}=0.01776\lambda)$ with dimension of (L2XW2XH) are stacked together in such a way that the Silicon segment is sandwiched between two Alumina segments over the radiating patch fed with inset 50Ω microstrip feedline. Antenna parameters such as return loss, VSWR, Gain and radiation patterns obtained. From the measurements, proposed stacked DRA results in multi-band frequencies with overall bandwidth of 6.6GHz with high gain and met with the specifications of UWB applications.
