Design of a Metamaterial Perfect Absorber: A Solar Energy Harvester

A contrived, as well as novel structure of metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA), is proposed based on vanadium dioxide (VO
2
). Vanadium dioxide undergoes an almost three times increase in electrical conductivity in the so-called terahertz gap. It has been numerically demonstrated that, this proposed synthesis of metal-insulator-metal exhibits a higher absorption rate of greater than 99% with a central frequency of 4.5 THz in the THz gap which seems more feasible than previous reports contingent on VO
2
. This novel structure has strong potential for solar energy harvesting, modulation, switching, sensors, imaging, and high-bit-rate communication in the terahertz gap range.
