Investigation of Single Shot Ice Accretion on Aerofoil of Wind turbine Blade using ANSYS

Icing climate have a various effect on wind energy generation such as increase in the aerodynamic load and weight on turbine blades which is the cause of less rotational speed of rotor. This arises the need of the ice prediction on blades. The deposition of ice on turbine blades affects the shape of airfoil, increase the drag force rather than lift which ultimately becomes the cause of less power output. The ice deposition is serious concern for the countries with super cold weather as in these regions power generation through wind have more challenges like less efficiency, more power losses due to the change in shape of blade profile. This paper contains the numerical solution to predict the ice formation and acceleration on wind turbine blade. The ice deposition is detected using Extended Messinger method and the numerous parameters which describe the wind turbine analysis such as wind speed, tip speed ratio, liquid water content in air is also calculated. The predicted ice shape of airfoil NACA 4412, with the 68m/s wind velocity which generates approximately 5MW wind power is considered in this paper and analysis is done by using ANSYS software by cad processor, solver method and post processor method. Moreover, in this paper the process of ice frosted on blades and its effects on blade performance after icing is presented.
