Active Cell Balancing Using Isolated Converters

This paper presents a comparative study of cell-to-cell Active Voltage Cell Balancing using a Flyback converter and a Multi-winding Forward converter. Both converters have high-frequency switching transformers. Primary and secondary windings of both converters are isolated. The working principle of both converters is similar. The summation of voltage of each cell connected across secondary windings gets transferred to primary windings through switching. From a primary winding average of energy gets redistributed to all cells across secondary windings. The balancing time of each converter is compared and limitations of Flyback converter are discussed. The results are obtained through MATLAB simulation.
