Abstract:

Predictions for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and user density (UD) are presented for a large variety of shingled heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) systems. Calculations are performed using a micromagnetic simulation that treats the heated media cells using renormalized spin blocks. Varied parameters include grain pitch (GP), heat spot full width half maximum (FWHM), reader width (RW), and shield-to-shield spacing (SSS). Results are optimized with respect to bit length and GP. Unlike previous work, the base condition features systems already available experimentally (to allow for comparison), extending to media and heads that allow greatly extended capacities. We also discuss the benefits of a rotated read head for these geometries.
