An Investigations on Design Dynamics of Synchronverter for P, Q and Frequency Control

As the level of Distributed Generation grows, the effect of low inertia and damping increases and shows impact on the system strength and dynamic execution. A solution for improving performance of such a grid is to use a Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) named as Synchronverter. Synchronverter is constructed employing short-term energy storage, a power inverter and an appropriate control mechanism. The purpose of synchronverter is to imitate the behavior of Synchronous Generator (SG). This paper emphasizes on design dynamics of synchronverter. To achieve this, all the dynamics of SG are executed in synchronverter with the proper utilization of swing equation to exhibit the satisfactory control operation. Synchronverter allows AC structure to be operated without the need for a spinning machine. All of the synchronous machine functionality, such as frequency and voltage regulation, real and reactive power control are preserved. The system performance is tested and demonstrated in steady state as well as step change mode. The excitation and inertia requirements are fulfilled using solar Photovoltaic (PV) with DC link capacitor. The control approach is validated using simulation and experimental studies.
