Arm-Volume Measurement for Early Lymphedema Detection using Kinect Sensor in Post-Surgical Oncology Patients

Breast-Cancer Related Lymphedema is a major problem that affects many women. Lymphedema is the swelling that typically affects the arms or legs and is brought on by the excision of lymph nodes or the harm they sustain during cancer therapy. The best strategy to control the illness and stop it from causing discomfort, recurrent infections, decreased mobility, and poor function is to start treatment as soon as possible. So, this work aims to focus on the multi-modal approaches to identify the risks and extent of arm-lymphedema in post-surgical oncology patients and prevent it at the earliest. The Kinect Infrared Sensor is utilized to capture the images of the body and after certain image processing techniques, the region of interest is obtained. Then, a voxelization method is performed to provide volume measurements in pre-operative and post-operative periods in patients. Using a mathematical model, the values obtained are compared for analysis. Clinical and pathological information from the patients are examined to determine the causes of lymphedema and its risks.
