Performance of Transformer Insulating Paper Under Bent Conditions Due to Aging

The accumulation of space charge results in the distortion of the electric field inside the paper insulation. With aging, several bent degrees are introduced in the insulating paper, thus weakening its performance. Not much data is available on the performance of a bent insulating paper. In this article, a bipolar charge transport model is simulated to see the performance of the paper insulation with a certain bent degree. Possible bents are introduced in a flat insulating paper, and the distortion of the electric field is observed. Bending of paper insulation results in increased trap depths due to which more free electrons and holes are trapped, thus causing a larger accumulation of space charges. These accumulated charges then cause the electric field inside the insulation to get unevenly distributed with more distortion causing rapid degradation of the insulation. The results obtained can be helpful in designing the paper insulation and maintaining the performance of the transformer insulation with aging.
