Optimizing Power System Observability Using GAMS

In this paper, The implementation of the best phasor measurement unit placement for enhancing power system observability. The system employed is a standard IEEE 30 bus system and the optimization of phasor measurement unit placement is done using an optimization software called General Algebraic Modelling System (GAMS). This work provides an introduction to GAMS programming and performs a number of scenarios on the IEEE 30 bus system, including the best placement of phasor measurement units, cost reduction, and optimising system observability with a restricted number of phasor measurement units. Further, a comparison is made between results of various other methods used for optimal placement of phasor measurement units and results obtained using GAMS. It is found that the results obtained using GAMS are fairly accurate with an added advantage of negligible computation time.
