Grid Code, Part 1: Fundamentals and Highlights for New Standards & Application in Power Systems

This paper presents the fundamentals, antecedents, parameters and highlights of the origin of the topic of Grid Code in Power Systems. In electrical systems worldwide, it is necessary to have robust Power Systems with an optimal level of reliability; however, the consequences of integrating renewable systems into transmission systems force companies to have continuity, flexibility and quality of energy from the source to the final consumer. The concept of grid code is described as the evolution of the transmission code of the so-called TSO's for its acronym in English “Transmission Systems Operators”; that is, the Transmission System Operators in each country or in each region have the responsibility that there are no blackouts, plant stoppages or an inefficient supply of energy. The above emphasizes that electrical systems require the integration of alternating current and direct current technology to contribute to the issue of energy sustainability that the world is demanding. This paper shows the highlights of having a reliable electrical system in each country under the argument that the systems must comply with the parameters of the Rule Books (Local Standards). The intention of this work is to show the current situation in some countries where Rulebooks are applied for Grid Code and its conceptualization and importance in the energy sector.
