Tool wear investigation and optimization in milling novel AZ31+SiC MMMC and comparing the results with as authentic AZ31 alloy

The purpose of this work is to analyze and compare the end-mill tool wear during milling of cast AZ31 and AZ31+9%SiC magnesium composites. Powder Metallurgy is used to fabricate magnesium metal matrix composite (MMMC). In this study, AZ31 is reinforced with SiC particles to improve strength and milling studies are conducted using carbide end-mills to test machinability considering 20 samples for each group. During milling the highest tool wear recorded for AZ31+9%SiC is 1.31mm, whereas for cast AZ31 it is 0.77mm. Because of hard reinforcements in MMMC, tool wear is higher and level of significance among two groups is found to be 0.023 (P;0.05). Due to the effect of hard ceramic particulates of SiC reinforcement, lower tool wear is observed in AZ31 than AZ31+9
