Security for Handover and D2D Communication in 5G HetNets

This chapter presents a general overview of the network and security architecture of 5G networks done by the Third Generation Partnership Project group. It explains the potential and crucial attacks that need to be considered in 5G network security, security mechanisms that are used or going to be used in the 5G, and the tools that are used to evaluate and analyze the security protocols. The chapter provides security analyses in terms of features, functionalities, and vulnerabilities with the corresponding solutions and open research topics in the heterogeneous environment cases of 5G, such as handover phenomena and device‐to‐device (D2D) communications. It reviews the state‐of‐the‐art security solutions for the 5G mobile communications with the evaluation of the security mechanisms, security requirements, or vulnerabilities in heterogeneous scenarios. Finally, the chapter provides a security investigation on heterogeneous networks in terms of handover phenomena and D2D communications because of the heterogeneity of the 5G networks.
