5G‐Core Network Security

This chapter provides a brief overview of the security architecture of fifth generation (5G). It also provides a brief description of the 5G core network (5GCN), and its design principles, and then describes the possible security challenges, the potential solutions and what needs to be done more, i.e. future research directions. 5G introduces some new security protocols and functions as well as adopts and hardens some protocols from the earlier generations. For trusted non‐3GPP access network, a user equipment is authenticated through the authentication, authorization and accounting server using authentication and key agreement. The concepts of cloud computing and storage are used in the 5GCNs in different ways. Since 5G is using new technologies such as software‐defined networking, network function virtualization, and the concepts of cloud computing beyond the centralized servers like mobile edge computing, the security implications due to these technologies must be considered.
