Improving Power Efficiency and Down-Up Bandwidth Symmetry in GPON and XG-PON Coexistence

ITU-T PON standards are dominant choices for FTTx in which GPON and XG-PON/XGS-PON are currently deploying by operators in fast pace. They can be co-existed in the same fiber by using different wavelengths. We propose a dual-homing GPON and XG-GPON coexistence scheme fully compliant with G.987, G.989, and G.9807. The proposed scheme reduces the overall network power consumption to between 10% and 16.3% and down-up bandwidth asymmetry by 20% based on traffic statistics collected at KPN broadband access networks. The proposed dual-homing scheme can be realized by integrated dual GPON/XG-PON transceivers to save cost and to meet the target low-carbon footprint encouraged by governments all over the world.
