Transmission Performance of P2MP Optical Networks Incorporating Digital MSC Direct-Detection Scheme

Recently, there is increasing interest in designing optical networks to support fifth generation (5G) and beyond services for the end user. A point-to-multipoint (P2MP) architecture can be used to serve this issue by adopting radio frequency (RF) multisubcarriers (MSCs) embedded on the optical carrier. The proposed MSC-P2MP networks in the literature use coherent detection scheme based on local laser, which increases the cost of the user receiver. In this paper, MSC-P2MP optical network configuration is proposed which is based on low cost, flexible, and ease of implementation called intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) scheme. The design consists of 8 subcarriers each carrier 25 Gbps bit rate, and implement using both dual-polarization (DP) 16-QAM format and single-polarization (SP) 16-QAM format, and the network simulation is performed by using Optisystem version 15. The results reveal that DP and SP networks can serve the end user successfully after 40 km and 20 km transmission, respectively.
