Active Front End Converter with Simple Control for Improved Power Quality

The existence of a rectifier with a load variation causes the power factor to decrease and increase the current harmonics at the source. Low power factor and harmonics are undoubtedly a loss for electricity users; besides being inefficient, it also results in losses. An active rectifier model known as Active Front End uses Hysteresis control to solve this problem. Matlab and Simulink were used to verify the model. Model testing with various loads resulted in a controllable power factor with an average of 0.9. Likewise, current harmonics can be reduced below 2% except for VSD loads.
