Performance Evaluation of High-Speed Manchester Encoded Free Space Optics Transmission System

Free space optics (FSO) information transmission technology is regarded as an attractive alternative to conventional wireless transmission systems based on radio frequency (RF) carriers due to their inherit merits that include high rate of transmission, secure communication, license-free deployment, and fast installation process. Nevertheless, atmospheric challenges such as weather attenuation, turbulent conditions, and beam spreading degrade the FSO transmission efficiency. Bit error rate (BER), received signal quality factor (Q Factor), received optical power (ROP), and eye diagrams are the key performance evaluation parameters in FSO transmission. In this work, to improve the performance of FSO transmission, Manchester coding technique is deployed. Manchester coding allows the information signal to synchronize itself, thus minimizing the bit errors and improving the transmission efficiency. The proposed Manchester encoded FSO transmission scheme is evaluated for clear sunny sky and fog conditions and reliable 720 m-4 km transmission is reported.
