Gray Hole Attack Detection and Prevention System in Vehicular Adhoc Network (VANET)

VANET is at the core of intelligent transportation system. Numerous issues, particularly in the area of communication security, are raised by vehicle communication. During the exchange of safety information among vehicular nodes, malicious attacks have the potential to alter or delete the data which may cause even life threat to the commuters. Therefore, it is important to recognize and eliminate these attacks. The role of the router for associated nodes played by each node of the VANET, that allowing a malicious node to compromise network security by sending false routing messages to nodes. In this paper, we focus on gray hole attack in which the malicious nodes drop packets randomly making it hard to detect. Though the problem has been addressed using AODV protocol but VANET being dynamic in nature poses challenges in detection. We propose the detection and prevention mechanism of gray hole attack in VANET communication system through NS2 network simulator. Along with the security the proposed methodology helps in enhancing the performance of the network by improving parameters such as packet delivery ratio and throughput.
