Modular Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker with Effective Fault Clearing and Energy Storing Capability

Hybrid DC circuit breaker(HDCCB) is a combination of solid-state circuit breaker(SSCB) and mechanical circuit breaker (MCB). It offers low loss and quick breaking properties. These are ideal for Multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) power transmission systems. Fast dc fault current interruption and isolation have emerged as a potential field for research. It is because in dc systems, fault current rises abruptly, and it is hard to break dc current due to absence of zero-crossings. Existing dc protection lags in fast tripping. This paper suggests a modular hybrid dc circuit breaker (MHD-CCB). Firstly, it will effectively clear the dc fault by automatically switching from commutation stage (CS) to primary current limiting stage (PCLS). Then from PCLS to battery banks charging stage (BBCS). Secondly, this dc breaker topology will save the energy of breaker's inductor that was fed during fault. Battery banks are introduced to save the energy of breaker's inductor. In the conventional topologies large surge arresters were used to dissipate this energy to clear dc fault as soon as possible. The presented work is implemented and tested in MATLAB/Simulink 2021a. Moreover, This topology has tested for 500kV HVDC systems.
