Getting Started Guide

Use the tools below to set up your subscription, internally promote IEEE Xplore, and stay up-to-date with new features.

Setting Up Your Subscription

Getting started with IEEE Xplore is quick and simple. Just follow these easy steps:

Submit Your IP Addresses

IP address authentication is the preferred method of authenticating IEEE Xplore customers and will enable all features and functions for end users. Once you provide IEEE the IP address range for your institution, your users will not be asked for access credentials. IEEE Xplore will automatically recognize your users, giving them immediate access to IEEE research.

To add or change an IP address, please complete the IP Address Amendment form or email onlinesupport@ieee.org.

Set up Athens/Shibboleth Authentication

Shibboleth and Athens authentication access provides licensed remote users with convenient and secure access to your institution's IEEE Xplore subscription. Customers who already use Athens/Shibboleth authentication to access other publisher resources can use this method to access IEEE Xplore in combination with IP authentication. Set up authentication by submitting the OpenAthens / Shibboleth Registration Form.

Submit Your Institution's Logo

IEEE Xplore includes prominent customer branding with institutional logos. Please review the specifications below before submitting your logo to onlinesupport@ieee.org:

  • Format: GIF
  • File size: < 7 KB
  • Dimensions: 200 x 60 pixels

Customize Your Institutional Name

Email to onlinesupport@ieee.org to customize how your institution's name (up to 120 characters long) will be displayed at the top of every page on IEEE Xplore and on the PDF Banner.

Set up OpenURL in IEEE Xplore

If you have an OpenURL link resolver, you can establish links between IEEE Xplore and additional resources in your institution by submitting the OpenURL Registration Form. Once initiated, users will be able to check your institution's holdings for non-subscribed content and documents cited in the reference lists of IEEE articles. Update your OpenURL Link Resolver's knowledge base by selecting the appropriate targets for your IEEE subscription.

Request an Institutional Administration Account

With an Institutional Administration Account, administrators can modify and customize certain information associated with their IEEE Xplore institutional subscription accounts, including:

  • change institutional subscription account display name;
  • update contact information for the institutional administrator;
  • upload new organization logos that will appear on IEEE Xplore;
  • update existing Open URL links.

To request an Institutional Administration Account, contact onlinesupport@ieee.org.

Configure Your Discovery Service

Update the settings in your discovery tool to ensure that your IEEE subscribed content is discoverable.

Find more information and recommendations on how to maximize your IEEE holdings via a discovery service.

Set up Your Federated Search Portal to Target IEEE Xplore

IEEE has created an API Portal that enables customers to set up automated searches of IEEE Xplore. Go to the API Portal to request an API key.

Access Usage Statistics

IEEE makes available a COUNTER-compliant usage statistics site to help subscribing institutions better understand how their users access content in IEEE Xplore. This free service provides secure, password-protected access to subscriber-specific usage information. For more information, visit the Usage Statistics Resources and Help page.
