In the paper the road vehicle simulation package Janus, developed in the Engineering Department at Durham University, is described. Janus is a flexible simulation package that allows internal combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles to be simulated, and their performance and energy consumption evaluated over standard driving cycles. The simulation techniques used in these ... View full abstract»

  • Measurement of dielectric loss in thin parallel-sided samples using an untuned cavity

    Publication Year: 1985, Page(s):280 - 284

The untuned cavity is used to measure dielectric loss in small samples of arbitrary shape. As long as certain constraints on loss and sample size are met, then results do not depend on reflections and interference effects, making the measurement quick and easy to interpret. The authors consider one situation in which more complicated analysis is required¿¿that of thin discs of high refractive inde... View full abstract»

  • New means of measuring current in the vicinity of zero in an AC circuit breaker

A very accurate means of measuring current in the vicinity of zero is required to measure a certain parameter characteristic of the behaviour of an electric arc in alternating current and dynamic state. To measure this current, the authors developed a device which inserts a high value shunt (0.1 ¿¿) in series with the circuit breaker at the moment chosen for measurement. Its mechanical principle i... View full abstract»

  • Theory of arc resistance of solid dielectrics

    Publication Year: 1985, Page(s):291 - 300

Three criteria determined solely by the properties of arc plasma and solid dielectric are deduced from the analysis of interaction between a strip-type arc and the dielectric walls of a flat narrow channel. Each of these criteria represents quantitatively the concept of arc resistance at a certain material state. Depending on the appropriate temperature threshold, these criteria may be considered ... • Effects of enhanced heating by surface oxides on arc cathodes

Heat conduction into and production within a metallic electrode can be affected drastically by the presence of thin surface oxides. Analytic expressions are derived for the temperature distribution in time and depth for a stratified oxide/metal cathode subjected to a pulsed DC arc with finite risetime. Results for cathode materials representing a wide spectrum of metallic and oxide properties indi... View full abstract»

Demands made upon the electronics industry and the fierce competition for both components and equipment here and abroad are leading to major changes in both component technology and interconnect. This review of these trends highlights the impact each is now having on the other and demonstrates how the electronics industry is responding to the need for improved design automation and factory mechani... • Marketing and sales co-operatives for electronic equipment manufacturers in a developing country: a feasibility study

    Publication Year: 1985, Page(s):321 - 324
IEEE is not the copyright holder of this material | Click to expandAbstract | PDF file iconPDF (351 KB)

Co-operative sales and marketing methods have been examined as a method of helping small electronic-equipment manufacturers to export their product. The research concluded that it is not a viable option for a variety of reasons. The research was conducted in Ireland for Irish manufacturers, but most of the results and conclusions are universally applicable. View full abstract»
