Design and Analysis of a Switched Reluctance Motor with Superconducting Windings and Tapering Poles

This paper presents a 6/4 switched reluctance motor with high-temperature superconducting (HTS) armature windings and tapering poles. The HTS windings are capable of carrying large current while the structure of tapering poles can improve the magnetic circuit. The cryogenic system of the stator and the mechanical configuration of the rotor are both simple and robust. The finite element analysis results confirm that the combination of the technology of HTS and tapering poles can improve the torque density of the proposed SRM by 29%.
