The mechanism of breakdown of dielectrics

W. A. Del Mar: Mr. Hoover's main thesis is based on certain experimental curves obtained by K. W. Wagner and showing the relation between volts and amperes in various dielectrics. In a discussion of another paper which took place the same year Mr. Peaslee

indicated that these curves could be interpreted in terms of volts and current density. Mr. Hoover makes a third step; namely, that these same curves may be interpreted in terms of potential gradient and current density, and he proceeds to build on that. It is disturbing to me that it took three men to take those three steps. I cannot help wondering how many other things we almost know, yet do not quite know, that will require two or three men to elucidate.
