Offshore generation looks set to take off

Britain is a windy island with a long coastline and the best renewable energy resources in Europe. The UK could become a leading player in offshore power, if the right decisions are made now. The UK's first commercial offshore wind farm has been given the go-ahead. Powergen Renewables will build and operate the wind farm at Middle Scroby Sands, around 3 km from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. The consents are for up to 38 2 MW turbines, using technology that has already been proven on land. Offshore wind in the UK can make a major contribution to climate change objectives, to secure electricity supplies and to the economic well-being through job creation and exports.
