Role of distribution automation in restoration of distribution systems after emergencies

Remote-controlled sectionalizers provide a simple and cost-effective way to automate distribution systems. These sectionalizers speed up isolation of faulted sections and restoration of unfaulted sections through alternate routes. They are also useful for step-by-step restoration of the distribution system following extended outages. The main focus of this presentation is to show that the order of switching has a significant influence on the total time needed to restore the system without violating the loading limits of the substation transformer. Future issues crucial for advancement of this research are also identified.
