Improvement of dielectric performance of Silicone rubber by incorporation of nano-sized fillers

Polymer based insulating dielectric materials have proved to be a viable alternative to ceramic insulators. In this work, we investigate the possibility of using inorganic nano fillers in order to improve the performance of Silicone rubber as an outdoor insulator. Two different kinds of nanometric fillers are used: Alumina (Al
₂
O
₃
) of size 40-47 nm, and Barium Titanate (BaTiO
₃
) nanopowder with particle size less than 100 nm. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) micrographs are used to ensure uniform dispersion of the nanofillers. We study the effect of nano-fillers on the propensity of RTVSR to tracking. Inclined Plane Test (IPT) for erosion as per the IEC60587 is performed. To estimate the extent of erosion, microscopy and weight loss analysis, Laser surface barium titanate fillers show greater resistance to tracking on its surfaces, in comparison with the pure bulk material as well as the alumina nanocomposite.
