Investigation of Adopting Ti–15V–3Cr–3Sn–3Al Tie Rod to Support the Cold Mass of Superconducting Magnet With Strict Alignment Requirements

Superconducting magnets with strict alignment requirements sometimes require that the coil is coaxially supported by a warm bore with a maximum deviation of 0.1 mm. The Ti–15V–3Cr–3Sn–3Al tie rod here is considered as the most appropriate cryogenic support medium for its low ratio of thermal conductivity to Young's modulus, isotropic mechanical property, and simple structure. An optimized design of a 3-D cold-mass support structure based on Ti–15V–3Cr–3Sn–3Al tie rods is given by considering the corresponding conduction heat leak, strength, and mechanical vibration property. The vertical relative displacement between the coil and the warm bore is derived when the superconducting magnet suffers an external impact during transportation, which implies that the 3-D cold-mass support structure is of sufficient rigidity. Although, slight offset of the coil is inevitable due to the accumulation effect of multiple shipments. We need to adjust the tie rod to make sure that the magnetic axis of the running magnet is coincident with the warm-bore center.
