Study of wind penetration and it's impacts in Kathmandu valley, a case study

Integration of wind turbines may have significant impacts on power system operation. Generation of electricity from wind power has received considerable attention. Induction machines are the one which are widely used as generators in wind power based generations. This paper analyzes the impact of integrating wind generation on the voltage collapse and loading parameters of the network of Kathmandu valley, Nepal. These requirements are simulated and compared for the study cases with and without wind generation impacts included into the study for the year 2008/09. The voltage stability for the Kathmandu valley network is determined by its corresponding notch curve (PV curve), obtained from Continuity Power Flow (CPF). In this paper, the effect of wind power penetration on the total system active loss and voltage collapse with corresponding loading is investigated by increasing gradually a rate of wind power penetration. The simulation analysis was established on Kathmandu valley network by PSAT/MATLAB, which gives access to an extensive library of grid components and relevant wind turbine model. This analysis would be useful for power planners to assess the future impacts of integrating wind energy capacity in the grids and design appropriate strategies for capacity expansion planning.
