Effects of ultrasonic wave propagating in liquid crystals on substrate

The acoustic phase change of a shear horizontal (SH) wave propagating into a nematic liquid crystal cell structure is measured under application of electric field. The numerical analyses are also performed by considering director distribution and viscosity distribution in the nematic liquid layer. The effective viscosity was calculated from the viscosity distribution profiles and the particle velocity of the SH wave in the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal viscosity calculated from the measured acoustic phase change under application of electric field is excellent agreement with the calculated effective viscosity.
