Surprises stemming from using linear models for nonlinear systems: review

The first part of the paper gives a bird-eye view of the state of the art of nonlinear dynamics emphasizing the new class of phenomena called chaos. The second part describes briefly three examples from the field of nonlinear power electronic systems exhibiting surprising properties.
