A food recognition algorithm based on dish recognition

As a new function for microwave ovens, the heating of food to a variety of respective target temperatures is being developed. A food-recognition algorithm, which is based on dish recognition, was developed to realize this function. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the algorithm. In the experiments, the position and direction of 'box lunches' were recognized. Experimental results showed that the correct recognition rate was 80% and that in case of incorrect recognitions the result of recognition was rotated by 180 degrees from the correct orientation. The recognition performance will be improved by the use of a color gradient.
