Battery Lifetime Modelling in Planning Studies of Microgrids: A Review

Integration of battery energy storage system (BESS) has been remarkably increasing in microgrids as a consequence of the high penetration level of renewable energy resources. A major challenge with BESS application is capacity degradation. The degradation of BESS is a complex mechanism that mainly affects the lifetime of the battery. Despite the importance of the topic, there is a lack of comprehensive models of degradation and hence the service lifetime in the literature. This paper presents a comprehensive and timely review on battery lifetime models in planning studies of microgrids. The existing models are deeply discussed, and the technical challenges are introduced.
