Capacity Optimization and Optimal Placement of Battery Energy Storage System for Solar PV Integrated Power Network

High degree of variability are introduced in a power distribution network due to the integration of decentralized renewable power sources (RES) that requires new solutions to assure the power quality with appropriate energy management. One solution is the integration of battery energy storage system (BESS) that plays a pertinent role in to mitigate the impact of RES, such as solar photovoltaics (PV). Nevertheless, considering the high cost of the BESS, an optimal sizing and placement is pertinent. In addition, the power quality degrades in terms of voltage and system losses with undersized or an oversized BESS. In this paper, an optimal BESS capacity optimization and optimal placement framework is developed based on voltage-to-load sensitivity technique which is tested and validated on a solar PV-integrated IEEE 8-bus distribution network. Based on the results, suitable BESS sizing and placement are identified that improves the voltage profile and maintains it under permissible limits with reduction of the system losses.
