An Investigation of the Use of Career Guidance App by Undergraduate Students: Case Study of Namibia

Career Guidance Apps are fast becoming a topic of debate amongst Career Guidance experts. They seem to be able to supplement career guidance experts and hence are very useful especially in places where there are no career guidance experts. To explore this subject further, this research investigated the use of Career Guidance Apps (CGA) by Undergraduate Students in Namibia. Applying a quantitative method using questionnaires, data was collected from 361 students. Findings of the study show that whiles most students usually work at choosing their career path in the first year of their university studies, most of them get guidance from friends/peers, high school teachers, career advisors, parents and social media, to a high extent. Most students got career guidance from newspapers and career guidance apps, to a low extent. Though usage of career guidance app was low comparatively, the majority of the students still used it. The study also found that career guidance apps were useful to students as they perceived it as a powerful career guidance tool, important career advice toolkit, easy to use tool and useful at suggesting options of career path. Considering that the study data was collected from one university and much of it from first year students, generalizing results beyond the research population and the considered technology could be challenging. Hence future studies should consider expanding the study population and technologies to consider.
