Virus Detection using Metagrating in Terahertz Regime

Due to the pandemic situation worldwide, there’s a need to develop rapid and sensitive diagnosis method for detecting different viruses. In this paper using simulation, we present a metamaterial which could be useful for a sensitive and non-contact detection of the virus in the terahertz (THz) regime. We studied angular scanning of THz wave on polymer-based metagrating, to achieve strong and broadband coupling with the analyte layer due to Guided-Mode Resonance (GMR). We observed the resonance shift of the structure following the deposition of varying concentrations and thickness of the virus layer on the surface of the structure. The proposed THz detection method suggests a rapid and low-cost diagnosis, especially useful for dangerous viruses and biomaterials.
