Trajectory Optimization of Lunar Landing using Genetic Algorithm

This paper addresses a two dimensional trajectory optimization for the purpose of lunar landing from the parking orbit to the lunar surface using Genetic Algorithm. Although the Genetic Algorithms dates back to the 1960s, they have become popular in solving various optimization problems. The formulation of the Genetic Algorithm took into consideration the desired landing site but its main objective was to minimize the time of flight the lander takes by optimizing the values of thrust direction angles and throttle settings as the control variables. By minimizing the time of flight, the lander can save on the costs of fuel which will be advantageous to the space industry. This Lunar landing problem has been optimized using the Genetic Algorithm.
