Enhance the Surface Flashover Performance of the Fluorocarbon Coating Composited with SiC Particles

Surface flashover brought insulation failure to the electrical power transmission systems under extreme condition such as rainy area. Hydrophobic coating has been applied in the prevention of wet surface flashover for decades, and composite materials with nonlinear electrical conductivity could regulate the electric field distribution and suppress the surface flashover. In this paper, a fluorocarbon resin coating composited with SiC particles was prepared. The wettability, dielectric characteristics, and surface flashover performance of the fluorocarbon resin/SiC coating were investigated. The results proved that the SiC particles could provide a high electrical conductivity under a high applied voltage, resulting in the relive of electrical distortion. Besides, the hydrophobicity of the coating also benefited the promotion of dielectric strength. The nonlinear conductivity and water repellency capability of the fluorocarbon coating composited with SiC particles contributed to the enhanced surface flashover performance.
