Battery Supported Solar PV-based PMSM Driven Water Pumping System

The agriculture field demands a reliable water pumping system with good efficiency. The solar photovoltaic (PV) technology based water pumping is developed to be a feasible system. This work presents a two-stage standalone photovoltaic (PV) water pumping system with a battery energy storage system (BESS) with an effective power transfer between them to operate a centrifugal pump coupled through a field oriented controlled permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive. A switched-LC high gain dc-dc converter is used at the first stage to track maximum power point (MPP) and a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) at second stage feeds the pump, connected through the PMSM drive. The maximum energy extraction from the PV panel and duty ratio control of the converter is attained by the incremental conductance (INC) algorithm. PMSM coupled water pump is driven by field oriented control (FOC) technique, where the speed is controlled using hysteresis current control method. The system finds applicable for intermittent water pumping operation. This system is modeled and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and results are depicted validating the claims.
