Real-Time Supervised Load Shedding Reconfiguration to Avoid Transient Cascading Failures

The objective of this paper is to show that realtime supervised reconfiguration of Under-Voltage Load Shedding (UVLS) and Under-Frequency Load Shedding (UFLS) relays, coupled with a decision support architecture, can help avoid cascading failures which develop in the transient timeframe. The proposed concept has been tested on a variant of the Nordic32 system. Cases of cascading collapse were generated using extensive contingency analysis, with detailed system dynamics as well as generic protection schemes. The proposed scheme was successfully applied to avoid a variety of cascading failures.
