Design Evaluation of HVDC Flexible Joints using Numerical Simulations and Conductivity Measurements

Joints are a key component in high voltage cable systems and the technology for HVAC systems is well established even though it is still a critical component of any installation. The technology behind extruded HVDC cable systems is less established and the relative novelty (<; 20 years of service experience) support the use of in-depth development and qualification tests. This paper presents a design evaluation of a flexible joint intended for use with extruded HVDC cables, introducing factor analysis as a design tool. The methods used are numerical multiphysics simulations and conductivity measurements on lathed samples taken from actual cables and joints. The results are congruent with other studies and support the soundness of the design.
