3D Modeling of the Optic Nerve Head of Glaucomatous Eyes Using Fundus Stereo Images

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. The disease affects the optic nerve head causing morphological changes in its structure. Screening of the disease is labor intensive and relies in time-consuming manual estimation of the size of the structural components of the optic disc, ordinarily in color fundus photographs. While a significant number of approaches have been proposed to automatically compute diagnostic metrics of the optic nerve head, most of them rely on advanced imaging technologies which are expensive. An alternate method based on stereoscopic photography may provide a cost-effective solution to glaucoma screening This paper presents a method to construct a 3D model of the optic nerve head, and its structural components by means of estimating the depth of the optic nerve head structure using pairs of stereoscopic fundus photographs.
