Perpendicularly Configured Array Elements for a Shared-aperture S/X Dual-band Radar

This article proposes the perpendicularly configured array elements in a shared-aperture S/X dual-band radar. The proposed antenna array contains one S-band element and nine X-band elements. The currents in the S and X-band elements have orthogonal directional characteristics, which effectively reduces the mutual coupling effects. In addition, an extended cavity structure is also applied to block the surface current and further reduce the mutual coupling effects. To validate the proposed design, the reflection coefficient and bore-sight gain characteristics are investigated. The results demonstrate that the proposed array has proper characteristics for the shared-aperture S/X band radar systems.
